Honduras is a fascinating country brimming with vast expanses of lush jungles, unspoiled beaches, rugged mountains, rushing rivers and ancient ruins. With a population of almost 8 million this Central American republic is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The capital and largest city is Tegucigalpa, founded by Spanish settlers in 1578. Honduras’ northern portions are part of the Western Caribbean Zone, a historic zone formed in the late sixteenth century that encompasses the Islands of Honduras including Roatan.

Honduras is a boon for eco-travelers and features the region’s most extensive tracts of cloud forest as well as the largest remaining area of primary forest. Its biodiversity is incredible, with over 700 species of birds and rare mammals including ocelots, giant anteaters, tapir and mantled howler monkeys. Western Honduras is home to the Ruins of Copan, considered one of the most spectacular cities of ancient Mayan civilization. The elaborate stonework and elegant artistry of Copan’s sculptures are considered without equal in the Mayan world.
